Treating Blackheads and Acne at the Root

by Valerie Garner

Blackheads are a common type of acne vulgaris typically found on the face and occurring in people at all ages. Blackheads are open comedones, or non-inflamed pores plugged by sebum and keratin with wide openings. Air is able to reach the keratin plug due to the open nature of blackhead openings and oxidizes the material, making it turn its blackish color. Whiteheads, on the other hand, occur in follicles that have a smaller opening. Air does not reach the follicle and the plugged material inside remains white.

As there is no inflammation like in other types of pimples, blackheads are much smaller manifestations of acne. Blackheads can appear anywhere on the skin where there are pores or follicles. They are most commonly found on the face and arms. It is possible, if left untreated, that blackheads progress into the more severe cystic acne as well as acne scars.

How Do Blackheads and Other Phases of Acne Form?

Blackheads materialize through an analogous course to other acne lesions. A normal functioning sebaceous gland produces the oil sebum, which makes its way to the surface of the skin through the sebaceous duct. However, sometimes this oil hardens or mixes with debris and/or skin cells and clogs the pore.

This plug becomes a blackhead when air oxidizes the keratin plug, making it black in color. Should the duct become damaged or become inflamed, it is considered a pimple or, if more severe, an acne cyst.

The leading cause of acne breakouts is injury to the sebaceous ducts. Teen acne arises due to puberty and adult acne typically due to stress; during these times, hormone levels cause sebum release to multiply. The power at which sebum travels through the sebum ducts literally causes injury to the cells lining them.

The type of sebum that the body produces also affects the healthy state of the follicle. When the body lacks essential fatty acids, the sebaceous glands produce a harder, more abrasive oil that also injures cell lining.

In addition, the sebum that cannot make its way to the surface begins to collect within the hair follicles, causing distension of the pilosebaseous glands as well as further irritation.

The body reacts, as it always does to any signals of peril, by ordering all available lymphocytes, macrophages and neutrophils to the site of injury. In the process of eating and destroying foreign bodies, these cells cause the inflammation manifested as acne. Cystic acne can form with or without infection. It is when cystic acne becomes infected that abscesses form, which also result in acne scarring.

Treating from the Inside: Acne and Blackhead Removal

Getting rid of blackheads requires treatment and management of the causes: sebum production, excess dead skin and bacteria found in the skin.

Even though exfoliation does target a contributing factor to blackheads, excess dead skin, and might be suitable for blackhead specific treatment, it irritates the skin and other acne pimples, causing inflammation and further flare up of acne. In order to treat acne, one must find an all-inclusive answer that can be used on all manifestations of acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules.

Most blackhead focused treatments, as well as a majority of acne solutions, tend to ignore other methods and concentrate on clearing backed-up pores. They typically include harsh, skin drying chemicals like benzoyl peroxide that can further cause damage to the skin by producing free radicals.

Solve your acne troubles by focusing on the inside by using a facial acne treatment that manages sebaceous gland activity naturally. Prescription sebum inhibitors have extreme side effects, which include almost unbearably dry skin, chapped lips, nose bleeds, eye irritation and birth defects.

Licorice root inhibits androgens, the hormones affecting sebum activity, and provides a natural, gentle way to control sebum output. Once sebum manufacture and distribution is controlled, you prevent the primary cause of acne - damage and therefore inflammation to the sebaceous ducts.

Adequate consumption of linoleic acid will maintain sebum quality and keep it from becoming hard and abrasive to the skin.

Employing the tricks of acne home remedies will get to the root of your acne problem. Move beyond treating your symptoms and stop acne once and for all.
